Dreu stood at the front of Treyvalthius’ cot while Kale stood on the other. They each had the edge of the bedsheet in their grasps, preparing to hammock him out. They had no other way of getting him from the cot to the cart, and he wasn’t in any shape to walk. Gwen and her mother cleared the main room for space and gave Trey some calming herbs to help with the pain.

“Everything is clear,” Gwen said. “Whenever you’re ready.”

Trey turned to his daughter, half of his face covered by a bandage. Natalie had set the bones as best she could, but there was a chance he might be disfigured. Dreu couldn’t imagine what was going through head. He had always been the good-looking Velen brother. He had looks, status, and money. He’d lost all of it when Darius turned on him.

“On my count,” Kale said. “Three . . . two . . . one.”

Both men lifted their end of the sheet and Gwen moved out of the way so they could have enough space. Dreu walked backwards letting Kale guide him, and Gwen touched his shoulder in thanks as he passed by. Trey’s condition had improved over the week and was expected to make a full recovery. What worried the women most was his silence. According to Gwen, he hadn’t said a word since Kale and Ella found him, nor had he tried to speak.

Gwen followed them outside and watched as they lay him on the pile of blankets and pillows Rona had made in the back of Savannah’s cart. Natalie wrapped him in one of the comforters, though it proved to be one of the warmest days of spring. Trey didn’t appear to be in distress, but then again, he never said when he was.

“Alright, let’s head out,” Natalie said as she climbed on the cart. “Are you sure you’re okay with me taking the day off?”

Gwen reached for her hand and her mother took it. “Take as much time as you need. Rona and I can manage here.”

Natalie blew her a kiss then Arryn snapped the reins. Gwen watched until the cart disappeared down the path. Dreu sensed she wanted to help her mother care for her father, but she had other patients who needed her too. He also knew she was glad to be back to work after her injuries had kept her away so long.

“Thank you both for helping us today,” Gwen said to Dreu and Kale.

“Of course. You know I would do anything for you.”

Dreu took her hand, and Gwen smiled up at him. Since their moment in the barn, they had gotten along much better, and they no longer avoided each other’s presence. She wasn’t quite ready to jump into a relationship, and there was the issue of Terry being in the picture. She promised to end things with him when or if he came back from his voyage. According to her, their parting hadn’t been too touching, so he hoped the lying bastard wouldn’t take it too hard.
